2026 SUMMER SCIENCE TRAINING PROGRAM

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR THE PROGRAM WITH LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE!

Are you passionate about volcanoes and Earth sciences? Then this programme is for you!
Join the 2026 INVOLCAN Summer Science Training Program and take part in a unique 4-week research experience in the Canary Islands. Participants will work side-by-side with researchers from the Canary Islands Institute of Volcanology (INVOLCAN) and the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energy (ITER), gaining hands-on experience in areas such as volcano and environmental monitoring, surface geothermal exploration, and social science applied to volcanology.

The programme combines fieldwork with data collection, analysis, and visualisation activities, enabling participants to gain practical insight into applied research. Training is delivered in English (with accommodation available for Spanish-only speakers) and includes an orientation day and a field trip.

A particularly valuable outcome of this training programme is that participants will be involved as co-authors of scientific abstracts based on the research conducted during the programme. These abstracts will be submitted to the 2027 European Geosciences Union General Assembly (EGU 2027, Vienna, Austria, 4–9 April 2027), the largest Earth sciences conference in Europe.

The 4-week training programme includes an orientation day and a field trip and will be delivered across four periods: 1st period (5 June–3 July), 2nd period (3–31 July), 3rd period (31 July–28 August), and 4th period (28 August–25 September).

The participation fee is €1,200 and includes accommodation, the field trip, work-related ground transportation, inter-island travel where applicable, insurance, as well as a post-course celebration dinner and closing ceremony.

Our Student Training History

Since 1997, our research group has hosted 506 university students from 141 universities for research and training during the period 1997–2025. Of these institutions, 126 universities were overseas, coming from 18 countries: Austria, Brazil, Canada, Cape Verde, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, São Tomé & Príncipe, Senegal, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

This sustained training activity highlights the international visibility and attractiveness of our research environment, as well as our strong commitment to mentoring and training the next generation of scientists.

Many of these students have subsequently pursued professional careers in research, academia, and technical institutions, thereby contributing to the advancement of the global scientific community.
